Question

Mn2+ Co2+ Cu2+ Fe3+ Ni2+

Chromatography. Suppose you dropped two drops of .1 Mol solutions of the above ions onto filter paper, separately onto 5 spaces, making sure they do not touch. Suppose then you then developed this filter in a 10mL eluting solution. The eluting solution is comprised of 9mL acetone and 1mL of hcl. What colors would be seen for each of the 5 ions?

Answer #1

Paper Chromatography is one of important separation technique. Here the component distributed between two phase are stationary phase and mobile phase. Stationary phase is Whatman filter paper and mobile phase is developed solution from mixture of HCl and acetone. The colors of the chloro complexes are more intense. Any hydrated metal ions present as colored will seen on the paper in dilute concentrations as colorless form.

Each ions and their colours are given below

Ni2+ - Pink, Cu2+ - Blue, Co2+ - brownish black, Fe3+ - green, Mn2+ - red
