Food Allergies

Food allergies are a very common hypersensitivity reaction that is prevalent throughout our society. In schools, many foods are banned or highly cautioned as the reaction that some individuals can have to them can be life threatening.

How can we as nurses provide education to the public about the potential dangers of these reactions, especially when there has been no exposure to and knowledge provided about it, within the hospital setting, or in the community?

Ans) If an allergic reaction is severe or involves several parts of the body, it becomes anaphylaxis and can be life-threatening. Food allergies are not only potentially life-threatening, they're life-altering. Food allergies—and the people who live with them—should always be taken seriously.

- Nurses are subject to exposure to environmental hazards through their contact with patients, physical and psychological job demands, and as a result of the drugs and technology with which they work. Consequently, they have intrinsic knowledge about a variety of environmental factors that can be encountered professionally. Their enhanced understanding of these problems can be useful in accessing the environmental issues that may be faced by their patients.

- Effective interventions for environmentally related illness require collaborative efforts from many disciplines due to the complex nature of environmental health issues, the rapidly advancing science base in environmental health, and the need for primary prevention strategies that often must involve professionals from fields other than nursing. Such collaboration includes ongoing dialogue and fluidity of roles and responsibilities.
