The concept of Multi-Tiered Topology is to distribute the workload across multiple database servers. It provides the following benefits:

(i) Availability of data as fault tolerance is increased.

(ii) Scalability of data as capacity can be increased.

(iii) Performance increment as multiple database servers are available.

In the Multi-Tiered Topology the data is distributed across multiple database servers. Also different layers are dedicated for different resources. Due to this approach data can move between various systems (layers) more effectively.
