Urology (Genitourinary System) and Obstetrics and Gynecology (Female Reproductive System). For the Urology Department, you write a 2 paragraph report and use that for the script of your Oral Report. For the Female Reproductive System, there are 2 audio clips containing spoken medical terms. See Instructions below for the special directions for this section only.

In order to earn the maximum credit for the written report you need to incorporate at least 10 medical terms for each department, using them in a manner that demonstrates your knowledge of their meaning.

  • Include the major or most common diseases or conditions seen in each department.
  • Include at least three of the principal procedures that are relevant to each department.
  • Highlight pertinent laboratory and radiological diagnostic services relevant to each department.
  • Limit your analysis of each department to two paragraphs.

Urology Department

There are many urologic disorders and diseases. The following are common diseases - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), Urinary Incontinence, Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), Kidney and Ureteral Stones, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, bladder prolapse, hematuria (blood in the urine), erectile dysfunction (ED), interstitial cystitis (also called painful bladder syndrome), overactive bladder and prostatitis (swelling of the prostate gland)

The commonest urological procedures are thus urethral catheterization, endoscopic procedures on the bladder, prostate, urethra and ureter (excluding ureteroscopic extraction of calculus), minor open procedures on the foreskin and the vas, bladder instillation, ESWL and prostatic biopsy

Few laboratory and radiological diagnostic services are- Biopsy, blood tests, CT Scan, Cystoscopy, Cytology, Digital Rectal Exam, post void residuals, prostate specific antigen (PSA), Semen Analysis, Stone Evaluation, Ultrasound, Urine Flow Study, Urine Test, Urodynamic and X Ray Tests.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Department (Female Reproductive System)

The most common diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology Department are Cancer and pre-cancerous diseases of the reproductive organs including ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva. Incontinence of urine. Amenorrhoea (absent menstrual periods), PCOD (poly-cystic ovarian disease), STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases like Chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV, genital herpes, and the Zika virus)

The common Obstetrics and Gynecological procedures are Adhesiolysis (This is also called lysis of adhesions. Cutting of adhesions), Cervical (Cone) Biopsy, Colporrhaphy (Surgical repair of the vaginal wall. It is used to repair enteroceles (hernias), Colposcopy, Dilation and Curettage (D&C), Endometrial Ablation and Endometrial or Uterine Biopsy.

Few laboratory and radiological diagnostic services are - Hormone Testing, Pap smear, Colposcopy, Trans-vaginal Ultrasound, Abdominal Ultrasound, Chorionic villus sampling (CVS), CT Scans and X Ray Tests.
