Study Questions 4 Directions: Complete all of the questions to the best of your ability. Unless otherwise specified, use complete sentences and provide thorough answers. All answers can be found in your Perspectives in Nutrition text book, text appendices, and BB resources. IMPORTANT: This chapter is chemistry-intensive. If you do not have a strong chemistry background, it is highly recommended that you do this weeks optional reading FIRST! 1. Name the three monosaccharides and list one characteristic for each. 2. What is the chemical composition of the monosaccharides i.e. the chemical shorthand? 3. List the three disaccharides. Which monosaccharides make-up each one? 4. List the different types of polysaccharides. What are the major differences of each? 5. Explain the step-by-step process of CHO digestion including the enzymes and other necessary secretions/structures. 6. Explain how each monosaccharide is absorbed into the body. Once absorbed, which monosaccharaides are converted to glucose? Explain this process. 7. What are some dietary interventions to help alleviate the symptoms of lactose intolerance? 8. How does our body maintain glucose homeostasis? Be specific and be sure to include the 2 major hormones as part of your answer. 9. What are some of the effects of too much added sugar in the diet? 10. List 3 potential health benefits of the starches/fiber and explain why they are beneficial 11. What is the DRI for CHO, added sugars, and fiber?12. What foods are CHO found in? How many grams of CHO do they provide per serving (hint review the From Guidelines to Groceries section)?
