Draw the product of each of the following reactions.
Reduction: The process of adding hydrogen to an organic substrate or removal of oxygen from the organic substrate is called as reduction reaction in organic chemistry.
Hydrogenation: When hydrogen molecule was added along the double or triple bond of the alkene and alkynes are called as hydrogenation reaction, the addition of molecular hydrogen need as metal catalyst to facilitate the reaction.
General example for the hydrogenation reaction:
Metal catalyst: The prime role of the catalysts is to reduce the energy of activation of the reaction and hence enhance the rate of formation of the reduction product. Metal with large surface area, such as platinum, palladium and nickel are the common metal catalyst used for the hydrogenation. The unsaturated compound and hydrogen molecules were absorbed on the surface of the metal catalyst, and then transfer of hydrogen atom from metal surface to unsaturated compound takes place, which resulted in the formation of reduced product.
The reduction reaction of cyclohexene derivative catalyzed by palladium was given below
The given alkyne was reduced in presence of platinum metal using excess of hydrogen resulted in the formation of cyclo octane.
Ans:The reduction of cyclohexene derivative was given below
