A 36 years old client was admitted with gastroenteritis. She has been vomiting and having severe diarrhea for 2 days. She is very weak. The current lab results are Na+128 mEql/L, K+ 3.0 mEq/L, Cl - 90mEql/ L. The physcian orders IV of 0.9% normal saline solution at 100ml/hr, NPO and I &O.

1. Is the lab results normal or abnormal? If so which ones?

2.. What treatment and / or medication(s), if any, would be ordered?

3. What compliment(s) if any is likely to develop if symptoms persist?

4. What education would you provide to the client to prevent this issue in the future?

In above case Na + and Cl is decreased because of dehydration due to vomiting. As the body lost the fluid. In the treatment first of all pt should be place NBM till the infection is removed from gi system . And meanwhile hydration is maintained by NaCl as it is less in lab report. Strict IO chart is measurred. And advise the patient that in future if it happens again than immediately contact your physician without wasting the time.
