Jurisdiction referred to the scope or extent of authority to take legal decisions and deliver judgement. Each court of law has its jurisdiction over the issue, subject or area and accordingly, decisions are taken by the court of law.

Here, subject matter jurisdiction means court has jurisdiction over specific subjects. For example, bankruptcy court will hear cases only related to the bankruptcy. In contrast to it, personal jurisdiction means authority over the parties involved inthe litigation. So, difference is of either subject or parties involved in the case.
