I am looking for help with the following question:

In a small community with 1600 households, we want to estimate the total daily water consumption during a specified dry spell. How many households should we sample if we want to estimate the total consumption with a margin of error of 2500 gallons with 90% confidence? We do not have pilot data but guess that the household daily consumption in that community ranges from 250 gallons to 380 gallons.

Answer #1

Ans:

Range=380-250=130

The Range Rule of Thumb says that the range is about four times the standard deviation.

Standard deviation=130/4=32.5

Standard deviation for total consumption=1600*32.5=52000

Margin of error=2500

z=1.645 for 90% confidence

Sample size required,n=(1.645*52000/2500)^2=1170.735

n\approx 1171

    I am looking for help with the following question: A large distributor just received a shipment of 1000 cartons of egg. Each carton has 12 eggs and the carton is up to standard if the weight of that carton (total weight of 12 eggs) is more than 28 oz. Previous shipment shows that 96% of the egg cartons are up to standard. In this sampling problem, the setup cost to sample additional units are negligible since the weighing station is...

    I am looking for help with the following question: In order to test whether students in a large State University have a certain genetic trait, an elaborate instrument has to be set up but the cost of testing additional subjects is not that expensive once the instrument is set up. From last year’s data, the proportion of students having that genetic trait was 0.28. To estimate this year’s proportion to within 0.02 by a 95% confidence interval, how many students...

    The Census Bureau groups data on households into census tracts, where each census tract has a total population of about 4,000 residents. Census tracts should be divided so that the households in the census tracts share certain characteristics, such as economic status. Even though most tracts are around 4,000 residents, there is some variability, which is the focus of this lab. In practice, census tracts usually have a population between 1,200 and 8,000 people.
