A civil engineer wants to determine the effects of velocity and water pressure on a water pump for a new apartment complex. Two velocities (20 mph & 15mph) and three water pressures (15 psi, 20 psi, 35 psi) were chosen for the study. Treatments were randomly assigned to 6 different water types.

a.         What are the experimental units?

b.         What is the response?

c.         Give the factors in the experiment.

d.         What are the treatments?

Answer #1

(a) Experimental Units: 6 different water types

(b) Response: Water pump for a new apartment complex

(c) The factors in the experiment:

(i) Velocity

(ii) Water pressure

(d) Treatments:

(i) Two velocities: 20 mph & 15mph

(ii) Three water pressures: 15 psi, 20 psi, 35 psi

(e) Potential extraneous factors:

The atmospheric pressure changes with height and hence the change in pressure that occurs over the pumping height is the pontial extraneous factor in this experiment.

    2. Researchers were interested in evaluating the effects of two low-fat diets with and without resistance exercise training (RT) on weight loss. The diets differed in the carbohydrate-to-protein ratio. A total 80 individuals with type 2 diabetes participated in the study. There were 40 men and 40 women and each group was randomly assigned to an isocaloric diet of either standard or high protein, with or without supervised resistance training (3 days/week) for 16 weeks. Body weight was measured before...

A study was conducted to compare the effects of three different drugs on the alleviation of anxious depression in non-psychotic patients. Twelve non-psychotic patients, all suffering from moderate to severe depression and anxiety, were grouped according to initial level of severity. Patients in each severity level group were randomly assigned to the three treatments (drugs). At the end of the experimental period, a combined anxiety and depression score as determined by the MMPI and Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale was recorded...
