Question
Need help with question C. Please review calculations from part A and B and correlate it with question C. Thx !
Lab 2 -Spring 2019 Part 1: Mean and Median The mean and median are both measures of central tendencies ( Le. they are estimates of the center of the set of data). The mean is the arithmetic average. The median is the value such that half the data points lie below the points will lie below the median and 50% will lie above the median. Problem 1: value and half the data points le above the value. The median is also called the S0tm per 12 10 12 30 22 30 19 22 Consider the data set Calculate the mean and median of the data set. (recall for the median, you will need to arrange the values from smallest to largest). a. Mean: q Median: 20 2 b. Consider the data set Calculate the mean and median of the data set. (recall for the median, you will need to arrange the values from smallest to largest) 10 12 30 21 19 82 Mean: 29 Median: 20 If a statistic is not significantly affected by an extreme value, it is called resistant to outliers. Based on the calculations from (a) and (b), which measure of central tendency is resistant to outliers? c.

Answer #1

Both the answers for part a and b are perfect.

c. We can see that the only difference between dataset a (10,12,19,21,22,30) and dataset b (10,12,19,21,30,82) is the element 22 from a is replaced by 82 which is extreme value or outlier

We can see that median is unchanged and remains 20 whereas mean changes drastically from 19 to 29

Thus, The median is less affected by outliers than the mean, and is usually the preferred measure of central tendency when the distribution is not symmetrical
