Answer #1

Answer: An estimated dosage range would be 25000 to 40000 IU of lipase per meal for the patient with acute pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas. Patients suffering from the disease have pancreatic insufficiency. Pancreatic enzyme replacement is one of the main treatments for nutrient malabsorption caused secondary to pancreatic insufficiency. The dosage of this lipase enzyme is based on the amounts of this present in the supplements. The initial dosage aims at providing 40-60IU of lipase per minute in the duodenal lumen. To achieve this aim an estimated amount of 25000 to 40000 IU of lipase should be given per main meal and about 5000 to 25000 IU of lipase per snack. It is also estimated that the dosage should not exceed more than 10000IU of lipase per kg of body weight per meal.
