Answer #1

From the table of 'charecteristics of packing' you have to find the specific surface area of packing.

For example, from table for raching ring - 1 inch - ceramic, specific surface area, Ap, is given as 56 ft2/ft3

For packing size < 3 inch, minimum wetting rate = (2.2 * 10-5 × Ap) m3. s/m2[this value is obtained from minimum wetting rate table]

Now convert Ap value given in m2/m3 and find the minimum liquid rate.

Actual liquid rate should be greater than minimum wetting rate and it is calculated using the given volumetric flow rate of the liquid divided by the cross-sectional area of the tower.

The value thus obtained is checked with the minimum wetting rate.

Example The interfacial surface area per unit volume, a, in many types of pack- ing materials used in industrial towers is virtually impossible to measure. Both a and the mass-transfer coefficient depend on the physical geometry of the equipment and on the flow rates of the two contacting, immiscible streams Accordingly, they are normally correlated together as the volumetric mass- transfer coefficient, ka. Empirical equations for the volumetric coefficients must be obtained experimentally for each type of mass-transfer operation. Sherwood...

For the table below, design an ion exchange system for the removal of calcium. The flow rate to be treated is 5.45 ML/d. The system should be sized so that the minimum time between regenerations is 72 h. The column diameter should be 3 m and there should be at least 2 columns. Pilot testing indicates optimal regeneration efficiency corresponded to using 10% NaCl solution (specific gravity = 1.07) at a salt usage rate of 310 kg NaCl per m3...
