Give the net ionic equation for the reaction (if any) that occurs when aqueous solutions of MgSO3 and HI are mixed.

Mg2+(aq) + 2 I-(aq) → MgI2(s)
2 H+(aq) + SO3 2-(aq) + Mg2+(aq) + 2 I-(aq)→ H2SO3(s) + MgI2(aq)
2 H+(aq) + SO3 2-(aq) → H2O(l) + SO2(g)
2 H+(aq) + SO3 2-(aq) → H2SO3(s)
No reaction occurs.

Answer #1

The reaction that will be going to take place

MgSO3(s) + 2HI(aq) ----------- MgI2(s) + SO2(g) + H2O(l)

Resolving the equations into ions

Mg(+2)(aq) + SO3(2-)aq + 2H+(aq) + 2I-(aq) ------- Mg(+2)(aq) + 2I-(aq) + SO2(g) + H2O(l)

Cancelling the common ions

SO3(2-)aq + 2H+(aq) ------- H2O(l) + SO2(g)

Hence the correct answer is Option C
