Courses HOME MARKETS LIVE LONG ROOM ALPHACHAT According to Ozgur Yasar Guyuldar, the head of global emerging markets sales at Austrias Raiffeisen Centrobank, which hosted the event, the presenting companies- from banking giant Akbank to industrial conglomerate Koc Holding and retailer Mavi -struck a decidedly positive tone. The mood was an optimistic one in part because the conversations between investors and executives centred around balance sheets, not politics. According to Guyuldar, during the various 40-minute-or-so meetings there were sparse questions about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the upcoming local elections in March or geopolitics more broadly. Another attendee echoed Guyuldars experience, saying talk of politics wasdefinitely secondary. Its understandable that not all ground can be covered in such a short amount of time, and nor is there likely to be much willingness on the part of local executives to talk freely about issues so far out of their control, as one portfolio manger in attendance remarked. But considering the central role that Erdogan played in exacerbating the crisis last summer and the fact that parliament just granted him emergency powers over the economy, any discussion about Turkeys investment prospects should start and end with him. The Turkish Days, as the event was billed, took place at a challenging time for the country. With an inflation rate still stubbornly above 20 per cent, growth has stalled. Consumers arent spending either, leading hundreds of companies to seek bankruptey protection, Imports have also cratered, with the balance betweeri imports and exports swinging from a deep deficit to a shallow surplus, as the black line indicates in the below chart from the Institute for International Finance: Exhibit 4. Investors are t.. Search Inbox HOME MARKETS LIVE LONG ROOM ALPHACHAT The slowdown comes on the heels of last summers currency crisis, which was sparked in part by concerns that the countrys central bank no longer retained its independence given Erdogans repeated attacks on interest rates. The accompanying stand-off with the US over a jailed American pastor did little to ease anxiety about Turkeys economic future. As the lira plunged against the dollar, Turkish corporations and banks with sizeable dollar-denominated debts saw their ability to repay evaporate. Things have settled down since the summers mania, in part because of the central banks steadfast commitment to keeping monetary policy tight-a decision it made in September when it jacked up interest rates to 24 per cent and kept them there. For one US portfolio manager, that in and of itself is good enough proof for him that the central bank maintains some credibility. Erdogan did put pressure on the central bank, but now the central bank is performing like one, he added But with important local elections just two months away and the economy on the brink of a recession, it remains unclear how long the avowed enemy of interest rates will stomach borrowing costs upwards of 20 per cent. What is more, he now has an even tighter grip on the countrys economic fate. On Wednesday, parliament granted Erdogan the power to take any necessary measures in the face of a negative development that threatens to undermine the countrys financial system. Per the law, the president is authorised and responsible for implementation of all measures beyond the powers of members of a newly convened Financial Stability and Development Committee. That committee will be supervised by the Treasury and Finance Ministry, the latter of which is run by Erdogans son-in-law And should Erdogan choose to flex his muscles over monetary policy again, Tim Ash at BlueBay Asset Management cautions that the results could be disastrous

Answer #1

Portfolio managers and analysts from Goldman Sachs, Macquarie, Alliance Bernstein and others held a meeting with the Turkish executives about the state of corporate and economic affairs after 6 months of currency crisis in Turkey at langham hotel in midtown Manhattan. According to Ozgur Yaar Guyuldar the presiding companies stuck a positive tone and there were questions about the Turkish president Reception Tayyip Erdogan but some others said the focus was on balance sheets and politics second. All the issues could not be discussed in 40 minute or so but as the parliament granted him the emerging powers over the economy, any discussion should start and end with him.

The event billed as 'Turkish days' took place at a challenging time for the country as the inflation rate is still above 20 per cent. Consumers are not spending leading to hundreds of companies seeking bankruptcy protection. Imports have reduce leading to a surplus balance between imports and exports. As lira plunged against the dollar Turkish corporations and banks saw their inability to repay the debt. Although the central bank did not retain its independence when Erdogan repeatedly attacked on the interest rates, since last September, central bank kept a tight monetary policy and jacked up interest rates to 24 percent. Erdogan was given the power by the parliament to take any necessary measures in the face of negative development that threatens the financial system. The financial stability and development committee will be supervised by the treasury and financial ministry which is run by Erdogans son-in-law. Also if Erdogan tries to interfere with the monetary policy again, results could be disastrous.
