Answer #1

CLAEAN AIR ACT

Clean Air Act of 1963, is a US federal law designed to control air pollution on a national level. It is one of most influential environmental laws, most comprehensive air quality law in world. It is administered by US EPA or Environmental Protection agency.in coordination with government.

Clean air act is required to regulate emissions of pollutants that endanger public health and welfare. The primary goal is to achieve national ambient air quality levels protective of public health and welfare by establishing air quality standards and imposing limitations on air pollutant emissions from stationary and mobile sources. Also to set safety standards for factories where toxic chemicals were used or emitted, and required polluters to install best pollution control equipment. It includes air quality and emissions limitations, ozone protection, prevention of significant deterioration of air quality, emissions standards for moving sources.Today clean air act continues to cut pollution and protect health of families and workers.

NATIONAL AMBIENT AIR QUALITY STANDARDS

National ambient air quality standards are standards for harmful pollutants established by US EPAunder authority of clean air act.. It is the allowable level of harmful pollutants. It specifies requirements of maximum amount of pollutants by building, work are, or site.

Standards are primary and secondary. Primary standards are designed to protect human health with adequate margin of safety, including sensitive populations. Secondary standards are designed to protect public welfare, damage to property, transportation hazards, economic values, and personal comfort and well being from any known or anticipated adverse effect of pollutant. An area which meet given standard is known as attainment area and that which do not meet is called non attainment area for that standard. Standards are required to reflect latest scientific knowledge and are reviewed every five years .Devices based on new technology are used for this purpose. Criteria pollutants in this standard are sulphur dioxide, particulate matter, fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide lead.

AIR QUALITY INDEX

Air quality index is used by government agencies to communicate to public how polluted the air currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become. As it rises public health risks increases.

Calculation of air quality index require an air pollutant concentration over a specified averaging period, obtained from an air monitor. Air pollutant vary in potency and function used to convert from air pollutant concentration to index vary by pollutants . It is grouped in to ranges. Each range is assigned a colour, descriptor, and a standardized public health advisory. Aur quality index from 1- 3 indicate low health risk, 4- 6 moderate, 7-10 high and above 10 very high.
