Recommendation letters for professors. Refer to the American Psychologist (July 1995) study of applications for university positions in experimental psychology, presented in Exercise 2.62 (p. 59). One of the objectives of the analysis was to identify problems and errors (e.g., not submitting at least three letters of recommendation) in the application packages. In a sample of 148 applications for the positions, 30 failed to provide any letters of recommendation. Estimate, with 90% confidence, the true fraction of applicants for a university position in experimental psychology that fail to provide letters of recommendation. Interpret the result.
