Whistling dolphins. In Exercise 2.177 (p. 104) you learned about the signature whistles of bottlenose dolphins. Marine scientists categorize signature whistles by type–type a, type b, type c, etc. In one study of a sample of 185 whistles emitted from bottlenose dolphins in captivity, 97 were categorized as type a whistles (Ethology, July 1995).
