For this project, you configure a backup in Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard using Time Machine. Time Machine should be previously set up so that this is not the first time it has been configured. You will need to have an external hard drive connected to the computer, such as one with a USB interface that is compatible with Mac OS X. You need Administrator privileges to perform this activity.

To configure a backup in Leopard or Snow Leopard:

1. Click the System Preferences icon in the Dock or with Finder open, click Go in the menu bar, click Applications, and double-click System Preferences.

2. Click Time Machine in the System section of System Preferences (see Figure 7-13).

3. In the Time Machine window, click Select Disk. Notice that you can configure to use the removable hard drive as the backup target disk. Click Cancel.

4. In the Time Machine window, click Options. Notice that you can configure items to exclude from a backup, such as a flash drive if one is connected (see Figure 7-14). Click Cancel.

5. Close the Time Machine window and any other open windows.
