In this project, you view the properties of a hard drive in Windows XP/Vista/7, Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, or Server 2008/Server 2008 R2. To view the properties of a hard drive in Windows XP/Vista/7 or Server 2003/Server 2003 R2:

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer (in Windows XP or Server 2003/Server 2003 R2) or Computer in Windows Vista/7, and click Manage.

2. In the tree in the left pane, click Disk Management.

3. In the right or middle pane (depending on the OS), right-click the drive partition you wish to view, such as OS (C:). For example, do not right-click Disk 0, but do rightclick the blue bar over OS (C:). Then click Properties. Make sure the General tab is selected. The disk type, file system, used space, free space, and capacity are shown along with a number of tabs that provide additional information (see Figure 7-8).

4. Click Cancel in the disk Properties dialog box. Close the Computer Management window.

To view the properties of a hard drive in Windows Server 2008 or Server 2008 R2:

1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and click Computer Management.

2. In the tree in the left pane, double-click Computer Management, if necessary, to display the items under it. Also, if necessary, double-click Storage in the left pane to view the items under it.

3. Click Disk Management under Storage in the left pane.

4. In the middle pane, right-click the drive partition, such as Local Drive (C:). For example, do not right-click Disk 0, but do right-click the blue bar over Local Drive (C:). Then click Properties. Ensure that the General tab is selected. The disk type, file system, used space, free space, and capacity are displayed along with a number of tabs that provide additional information.

5. Click Cancel in the disk Properties dialog box and close the Computer Management window.
