Windows XP/Vista/7 and Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2 all offer the Program Compatibility Wizard from which to run programs adapted to earlier operating systems, such as Windows 95 or XP. This project gives you the opportunity to use the Program Compatibility Wizard. If you are using Windows XP, you’ll need to obtain from your instructor a program originally designed for Windows 95. If you are using Windows Vista/7 or Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2, obtain a program designed for Windows XP or earlier and place it in the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folder on your computer. Or, if you don’t have a legacy program to run, you can use the wizard and select an existing program for practice.

To use the Windows XP Program Compatibility Wizard:

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and click Program Compatibility Wizard.

2. Click Next after the wizard starts.

3. What options do you see for selecting programs?

4. Select the option I want to locate the program manually, and then click Next.

5. Enter the path to the program that you want to start, or click the Browse button to find and select the program.

6. Click Next.

7. What compatibility modes are available?

8. Select Microsoft Windows 95, and then click Next.

9. Select the appropriate display settings, such as 640 X 480 screen resolution (ask your instructor if you are unsure about what to select). Click Next.

11. What happens after you click Next?

12. Test the program and then close it.

13. If the program ran successfully, click the option Yes, set this program to always use these compatibility settings, and click Next. If it did not run successfully, click No, try different compatibility settings, and repeat Steps 8 through 12, trying different settings.

14. Click Yes to send program compatibility information to Microsoft so that Microsoft can use this information for its own research. Click Next.

15. Click Finish.

click No, report the problem to Microsoft and check online for a solution.

13. The Program Compatibility window displays any issue found while running the program. Note if there were any issues. Because this is practice, close the Program Compatibility window regardless of whether or not there are issues reported.
