The two beam cross sections shown in Figure P4.l4 have depths h twice the widths b. The I-beam has equal flange and web thicknesses of 0.10h. The beams are made of a material with yield point Y and are subjected to a pure bending moment M. For each beam, determine the ratio M/MY, where MY is the maximum elastic moment, when yielding has penetrated to a depth of 0.10h at the top and bottom of the beams. The moment M produces compression in the top fibers of the beams.
