New-book reviews. Choice magazine provides new-book reviews in each issue. A random sample of 375 Choice book reviews in American history, geography, and area studies was selected, and the “overall opinion” of the book stated in each review was ascertained (Library Acquisitions: Practice and Theory, Vol. 19, 1995). Overall opinion was coded as follows: 1 = would not recommend, 2 = cautions or very little recommendation, 3 = little or no preference, 4 = favorable/recommended, 5 = outstanding/significant contribution. The data are summarized in the following table:
Opinion Code | Number of Reviews |
1 | 19 |
2 | 37 |
3 | 35 |
4 | 238 |
5 | 46 |
Total | 375 |
