West Nile virus cases. West Nile virus, transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, was first isolated in 1937 in Africa, West Asia, and the Middle East. The first outbreak of the virus in the Western Hemisphere did not occur until 1999 in New York City. The U.S. Geological Survey tracks outbreaks of West Nile virus each year. The number of human cases in 2006 is recorded for each of California’s 58 counties in the WNV file. (Data for the first and last five counties are shown in the accompanying table.) Use a graphical method to describe the distribution of West Nile virus cases in California counties.
