Healing heart patients with music, imagery, touch, and prayer. “Frontier medicine” is a term used to describemedical therapies (e.g., energy healing, therapeuticprayer, spiritual healing) for which there is no plausibleexplanation. The Lancet (July 16, 2005) published theresults of a study designed to test the effectiveness oftwo types of frontier medicine—music, imagery, andtouch (MIT) therapy and therapeutic prayer—in healingcardiac care patients. Patients were randomly assignedto receive one of four types of treatment: (1) prayer,(2) MIT, (3) prayer and MIT, and (4) standard care(no prayer and no MIT). Six months after therapy, thepatients were evaluated for a major adverse cardiovascularevent (e.g., a heart attack). The results of the studyare summarized in the accompanying table and saved inthe HEALING file.
