Even though TCP/IP is typically installed when you install a Windows operating system or purchase a computer with Windows already installed, there can be circumstances in which TCP/IP is inadvertently disabled or uninstalled. In this project, you learn from where to install TCP/IP in Windows XP/Vista/7, Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, or Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2.

To learn from where to install TCP/IP in Windows XP or Windows Server 2003/Server

2003 R2:

1. Click Start and click Control Panel.

2. Click Network and Internet Connections from the Category View, and then click Network Connections.

3. Right-click a live connection, such as Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection and click Properties.

4. Click the Install button in the dialog box.

5. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Protocol, and then click Add.

6. If TCP/IP version 4 or TCP/IP version 6 is not installed, you can install it from the Select Network Protocol dialog box by clicking the protocol and then clicking OK (or click the Have Disk button if you have to load the driver from a disk). Click Cancel in the Select

Network Protocol dialog box.

7. Click Cancel in the Select Network Component Type dialog box.

8. Click Cancel in the Connection Properties dialog box.

9. Close the Network Connections window and close any other open windows.

To learn from where to install TCP/IP in Windows Vista/7 or Windows Server 2008/Server 2008 R2:

1. Click Start and click Computer.

2. In the left pane of the Computer window, click Network (you may need to expand the Folders option in the left pane to view Network).

3. In the button bar at the top of the Network window, click Network and Sharing Center.

4. In Windows Vista and Server 2008, click Manage network connections in the left pane of the Network and Sharing Center window. In Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 click, Change adapter settings in the left pane.

5. Right-click an active network connection, such as Local Area Connection or Wireless

Network Connection and click Properties (see Figure 9-13).

6. Click the Install button in the dialog box.

7. In the Select Network Feature Type dialog box, click Protocol, and then click Add.

8. If TCP/IP version 4 or TCP/IP version 6 is not installed, you can install it from the Select Network Protocol dialog box by clicking the protocol and then clicking OK (or click the Have Disk button if you have to load the driver from a disk). Note that if either or both of these protocols are already installed, then you won’t see an option to install them in the Select Network Protocol dialog box. Click Cancel in the Select Network Protocol dialog box.

9. Click Cancel in the Select Network Feature Type dialog box.

10. Click Cancel in the Connection Properties dialog box.

11. Close the Network Connections window.

12. Close the Network and Sharing Center window and any other open windows.
