UNIX and Linux use TCP/IP and other protocols for network communications. In this project, you use the ifconfig command to determine the IP address assigned to your Linux computer (the computer should be connected to a network).
To view the IP address:
1. Access the command line, such as by opening a terminal window (click Applications, point to System Tools, and click Terminal).
2. Type ifconfig -a and press Enter. If necessary, scroll to view your IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, or expand the window to view all of the information (see Figure 9-16). If
you have a wired connection, look for the IP addresses across from eth0, or if you have a wireless connection look for the IP addresses associated with wlan0. The IPv4 address is the inet addr and the IPv6 address is the inet6 addr. What is the loopback (lo) IPv4 address for your computer?
3. Close the terminal window.
