According to Titchener, the subject matter of psychology was conscious experience. Titchener defined it by giving the example of a room having a temperature of 85 Fahrenheit. The temperature can be measured even without anyone experiencing it.
When people enter that room they feel hot. Titchener was talking exactly about this, the feeling of warmth felt by the observer. Only an individual can experience the feelings. These feelings are dependent on the observer.
In physics, physicists measured the lights and sounds while the psychologists reviewed how the sound and light affected the experience of the observer. Titchener, found the study of experience by the individual as the proper locus for psychological research.
The subject matter of psychology focused purely on the experience by the observer. It was the basis in the study of psychology. Like in other fields people took readings, in psychology the sensations, feelings, and experiences felt by the observer are the observations or readings.
