In what ways did Titchener begin to alter his system late in his career?
Later in life, Titchener began modifying his own teachings. In 1918 he dropped the concept of mental elements and stated that the psychology should focus more upon the higher dimension of mental processes instead of basic mental elements.
He wanted to study psychology by the attributes that he had given, namely, extensity, intensity, duration, clearness, and quality. He even told one of his graduate students to give up the old way of psychology and embrace the new psychology, which was studied in terms of higher dimensions.
Titcheners death prevented him from implementing his new ideologies firmly. These new ideas suggested openness and flexibility. In 1920, he even began questioning his own terminology of Structural Psychology. He rephrased it to Existential Psychology.
Although, these ideas were not incorporated into Titcheners system, it gave direction for the new movement to take place. If Titchener had not died at that time he would have effectively reached his goal.
