Describe Broca’s approach to brain research. What conclusions did he reach concerning the functioning of the brain?
In the modern century, the concept of Gage’s skull and Harlow’s observations has enmarked the ablated areas of the brain that corresponds to changes in the behavioral patterns of the brain. A well-known physiologist, Paul Broca, modified the Flourens’s concept of work and postulated a plausible clinical method to show that the cortex acted as a single unit.
Broca was considered as the first person to suggest that clinical observations are to be made by examining autopsy tests that are used to locate a specific brain area by causing specific disorder conditions. According to Broca’s research, he confirmed that a left portion of the cortical hemisphere is present in the brain that is associated with the production of speech in the distinct area and is known as Broca’s area.
Broca’s identified the function of the cortex that was supported by phrenologists and damaged the contention of the Flourens’s concept by suggesting the fact that the cortex was considered as a single unit. He also did not find the area of speech where phrenologists suggest that a specific Broca’s area is present.
