Thus, in this context, Helmholtz proposed a theory known as the resonance place theory of auditory perception.

According to Helmholtz’s resonance place theory of auditory perception, he identified that the different nerve fibers along with their basilar membrane are more sensitive to differences in the frequency of sound waves. The short fibers respond to the higher frequencies and the long fibers respond to the lower frequencies. A wave of a distinct frequency causes the vibration of the specific fibers of the basilar membrane that triggers the sensation of sound corresponding to that of frequency.

Helmholtz also proposed that a similar phenomenon also occurs in the middle ear through which various combinations of stimulation of fiber explains the major variety of auditory experiences. The variations of this theory get persist in the today and future era also.
