The group is concerned that antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria will develop in these animals as a result of the practice. This will make it very difficult to control bacterial diseases spread through meat and poultry products. The USDA has not seen this become a major problem and is concerned about an increase in the cost of foods if the practice is discontinued. Higher food prices may lead to more malnutrition in families who cannot afford these higher priced foods.
