1. Solvent properties should be taken into account such as it should have suitable boiling point if heating of the reactants is involved, polarity of solvent should be kept in mind. For example protic solvents give higher rates for SN1 reactions but not for SN2 reactions.
2. Other factors to be kept in mind are cost-effectiveness, commercial availability, and effectiveness for use at the task at hand.
3. Many solvents used in labs are not suitable for scaling up due to factors like high cost, toxicity, flammability, carcinogenicity etc.
