Solutions For An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry Chapter 15 Problem 9Q

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Alcohol is a beverage or drink that contains appropriate amounts of ethanol that helps in the reduction of stress and anxiety. It is a primary metabolite, which is produced as a byproduct of certain metabolism. Alcohol group imparts negative charge to the molecule. It is present in all types of major biomolecules.

An alcohol is an organic compound where the functional group is hydroxyl or (-OH) found in a saturated carbon. It refers to ethanol or (ethyl alcohol), the one that is predominant in alcoholic drinks. Seventy percent of ethanol is used as a skin disinfectant or hand sanitizer.

If phosphorous tribromide is added to alcohol, initially alkyl bromide is formed. Later, alcohol reacts with alkyl bromide for the formation of ether. The lone pair on oxygen act as a nucleophile and attack on electrophilic R-alkyl group causing bromine to leave. It can be avoided by adding unreacted alcohol to phosphorous tribromide.
