Solutions For An Introduction to Genetic Analysis Chapter 15 Problem 14P

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

It took almost four decades after the discovery of transposable elements in maize to honor Barbara McClintock.

It may be due to politics on one side, but she was well ahead of her time. She observed the disinterest and lack of confidence that people had towards her findings. So she stated once, that she has stopped publishing detailed reports long back due to the conclusions drawn from her studies.

In 1970's, transposition was discovered in bacteria and yeast and also in most genomes. The importance of transposition in the transfer of drug resistance, cancer, and genetic engineering, and so on was finally understood at the molecular level.

So, after these findings her work was fully recognized and she was awarded Nobel Prize for her brilliant work.
