Amnestic disorder

If any of the given abilities are depressed in a person, then the disorder is known as amnestic disorder.

• The ability to form new memories

• The ability to gain new information

• The ability to learn new things

• The ability to remember old memories, information etc.

In other words, total loss of memory is referred to as an amnestic disorder. Its famous name is amnesia.

Causes of amnestic disorders

There are various causes of amnestic disorders:

• Brain damage via injury or an accident: If the temporal lobe of the brain is injured via an accident or any other way, then, it would result in amnesia.

• Chronic alcoholism: Brain damage occurs via continued usage of a drug; or substance use. Alcohol is one such substance which causes such damage.

• Degenerative brain disease: diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease etc. cause amnesia.

• Tumor: Tumor in a particular area of brain related with memory will result in memory loss or amnesia.

• Deficiency of vitamins in our body: Korsakoff’s syndrome is an amnestic disorder. It is caused by deficiency of vitamin B1 in our body.
