Through this project, you install Windows Server 2008. You need the installation

DVD for either Windows Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise Edition.

To install the Windows Server 2008 operating system:

1. Ensure the computer’s BIOS is set to boot first from the DVD/CD-ROM drive. (Refer to Hands-On Project 5-1 for booting via DVD/CD-ROM.)

2. Insert the Windows Server 2008 installation DVD.

3. Power off the computer.

4. Turn on the computer, and if necessary press the key combination to boot from the DVD/CD-ROM drive.

5. The DVD may take a few moments to load.

6. When the Install Windows window appears, specify the language to install, such as English, in the Language to install drop-down box. In the Time and currency format box, make your selection, such as English (United States). In the Keyboard or input method box, make your selection, such as US.

7. Click Next.

8. The next window enables you to commence the installation. Before you get started, notice there are links for What to know before installing Windows and Repair your computer. The Repair your computer link is for after Windows Server 2008 is installed and a problem arises, such as when the computer won’t boot after a power failure. You can use this link to repair problems with boot files.

9. Click the Install now button.

10. Enter the Product Key (unless you are using a trial version that does not require a product key).

11. Click Next.

12. In the next Install Windows window you can select one of the following under the Operating System column (this example is for an Enterprise Edition installation, as shown in Figure 5-29):

? Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (Full Installation)

? Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (Server Core Installation)

Depending on your version, select Windows Server 2008 Standard (Full Installation) or Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (Full Installation) and click Next.

13. Read the license terms, click the box for I accept the license terms, and click Next.

14. In the next window, select Custom (advanced) as the type of installation to perform (see Figure 5-30)

.

15. You may see the Compatibility Report window to report possible compatibility conflicts and direct you to check the Windows Server Catalog at go.microsoft.com/fwlink/? LinkID=85172 (takes you to the general Windows Server 2008 page).

16. The Windows Installation program displays disk partitions, including existing partitions and unallocated disk space. Select the disk partition or unallocated space you want to use. For example, click Disk 0 Unallocated Space on a new computer. (Note that the window displays an informational message at the bottom, if you highlight a partition that is too small or one that contains a non-NTFS partition. Further, there may be a Load Driver link at the bottom of the window so you can install a more recent hard disk driver or a driver for a disk that is not properly recognized by Windows Server 2008. You can click the Load Driver link or press F6 at this point to load a new driver.) Also, you may see a Drive options (advanced) link which enables you to set up customized drive options. Figure 5-31 shows a disk with two partitions (both already allocated to NTFS), from which to select. Click Next after you’ve made your selection.

17. The installation program begins installing Windows Server 2008 (you’ll see progress information about Copying files, Expanding files, Installing features, Installing updates, Completing installation).

18. The installation program restarts the computer. Let it boot from the hard drive. If your computer is set up to boot first from a DVD, you may need to remove the Windows Server 2008 Installation DVD before it reboots, and then put the DVD back in after it reboots.

19. You see the message: Please wait while Windows sets up your computer.

20. Next you see the Install Windows window in the Completing installation phase.

21. The system reboots again. Let it boot from the hard drive. Again, if your computer is set up to boot first from a DVD, you may need to remove the Windows Server 2008 Installation DVD before it reboots. (The boot process may take a little extra time when performing an installation in Hyper-V or in another virtual server system.)

22. You’ll see the message (a red circle with a white x in it): The user’s password must be changed before logging on the first time. Click the OK button.

23. Enter a new password for the Administrator account and then enter the same password again to confirm the password. Click the blue circle with the white right-pointing arrow inside.

24. If you enter a password that is not a strong password, you’ll see the message: (with a white x in a red circle) Unable to update the password. The value provided for the new password does not meet the length, complexity, or history requirements of the domain. Click OK and enter a different password. A strong password is one that is over 8 characters and uses a combination of upper and lowercase characters, numbers, and symbols such as &.

25. When you see the message Your password has been changed, click OK.

26. At this point, the Windows desktop is opened and the Initial Configuration Tasks window is displayed. This window can be used to configure specific capabilities on the server.

27. From this point on, if you log off you can log back on to the Administrator account using the password you entered earlier. The Administrator account has complete privileges to manage Windows Server 2008.

Reference Project 5-1

Your hardware system BIOS controls many basic functions of your computer. This chapter discusses the need for being able to boot from a DVD/CD-ROM. You can find out how your system BIOS handles DVD/CD-ROM booting by displaying the BIOS Setup or Configuration screen on your computer. To display your current booting options by looking at your BIOS:

1. Display your computer’s BIOS Setup or Configuration screen. How you do this varies with the machine, but common techniques are to press F1 or F2 during the system bootup process. Other keystrokes or combinations may be used, such as Del, Ctrl+Alt+Esc simultaneously, or F10. Another way is to hold down a key on the keyboard while booting. The BIOS often sees the error and gives you the option to go into Setup. If none of these works, study your computer’s documentation, or carefully read all screens during system boot.

2. Look for settings for boot order or boot sequence. This usually involves using the cursor keys to position the cursor over a field, then pressing the spacebar or Page Up/Page Down to step through the settings.

3. Step through the choices available on your machine.

4. If available (and with your instructor’s permission), choose a DVD/CD-ROM boot, and save and exit the Setup or Configuration screen.

5. Insert your operating system DVD/CD-ROM disk and reboot the computer. Did the DVD/CD-ROM boot your computer? What error messages did you see, if any? Can you reconfigure your system to boot from your hard disk drive?
