A design for a low-friction support platform is shown in Fig. 1. The platform can move in only one direction. The design consists of two rows of 5 ball bearings of diameter 0.5 inch, that are constrained to move in two parallel, right angle “v-shaped” tracks as shown. A load of 100 lbf is distributed uniformly on the upper platform so that it distributes uniformly among the 10 balls. If the ball bearings and the two platforms are made of steel with E = 30 × 106 psi and μ  = 0.3, what would you predict to be the maximum normal stress and where will the location be for this stress? Can you suggest a design change to this concept that would improve the load-carrying capacity of the platform?
