In this project, you learn from where to configure a DSL or modem-based dial-up network in Windows Vista/7 or Server 2008/Server 2008 R2. Because many modern computers do not come with a modem or you may not have access to a DSL connection, you cancel the process before finalizing a connection and so you do not have to have actual information from an ISP. You need access to an account that has Administrator privileges. To learn from where to configure a DSL or modem-based dial-up network in Windows Vista or Server 2008:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and make sure you are in Classic View.

2. Double-click Network and Sharing Center.

3. In the left pane, click Set up a connection or network.

4. Notice the options from which to select in the Choose a connection option window (see Figure 8-14, but note that depending on your computer, you may see fewer options than are shown in the figure).

5. Click Connect to the Internet, if this option is not already selected. Click Next.

6. If you see the You are already connected to the Internet window, click Set up a new connection anyway.

7. What options do you see in the How do you want to connect? window? If Broadband (PPPoE) is available for a DSL or a cable modem connection, click this selection. Notice the information required, such as the User name, Password, and Connection name. Click Cancel. Alternatively, if Dial-up is available as a selection, click this option.

Notice the information required for a Dial-up connection, such as the Dial-up telephone number, User name, Password, and Connection name. Click Cancel. Finally, if neither Broadband (PPPoE) or Dial-up is available in the How do you want to connect? window, click Cancel.

8. Close the Network and Sharing Center window.

To learn from where to configure DSL or modem-based dial-up network in Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and make sure that View by is set to Large icons or Small icons.

2. Click Network and Sharing Center.

3. Click Set up a connection or network in the Network and Sharing Center window.

4. Notice the options from which to select in the Choose a connection option window (see Figure 8-15, but note that depending on your computer, you may see fewer options than are shown in the figure).

5. Click Connect to the Internet, if this option is not already selected. Click Next.

6. If you see the You are already connected to the Internet window, click Set up a new connection anyway.

7. What options do you see in the How do you want to connect? window? If Broadband (PPPoE) is available for a DSL or a cable modem connection, click this selection. Notice the information required, such as the User name, Password, and Connection name. Click Cancel. Alternatively, if Dial-up is available as a selection, click this option. Notice the information required for a Dial-up connection, such as the Dial-up telephone number, User name, Password, and Connection name. Click Cancel. 8. Close the Network and Sharing Center window.
