Wilderness Supply is a 38-person company that makes outdoor clothing such as parkas, jackets, backpacks, hats, gloves, bags, and other equipment. The management group, sales representatives, purchasing agent, and inventory and shipping specialists all use computers that must be connected to the Internet to communicate with distributors, suppliers, a payroll preparation company, and for many other purposes. Currently, all of the computers have V.92 dial-up modems and access to telephone lines for outside communications. Also, the computers are connected to one another through a LAN. The company is contracting with you to consult about ways in which to support modem access and to improve these communications.

Addressing a Telecommunications Line Problem

One week ago, a building contractor was working in the area of the Wilderness Supply offices and disrupted telephone service with his backhoe (the telephone lines are buried underground). Service has been restored, but ever since the mishap, all of Wilderness Supply’s modem users have reported very slow access. The telephone company would like documentation of the access speed because they believe that all the problems with the damaged lines have already been addressed. What do you recommend to Wilderness Supply as a way to demonstrate to the telephone company that there is still a problem?
