Linux with the GNOME desktop offers the Network Connections tool for configuring a DSL or mobile broadband connection. In this project, you learn from where to configure a DSL or mobile broadband connection using the Network Connections tool.

To learn how to use the Network Connections tool:

1. In the top Panel, click System, point to Preferences, and click Network Connections.

2. In the Network Connections window, click the DSL tab.

3. Click the Add button.

4. Make sure the DSL tab is displayed as in Figure 8-16.

5. Click the PPP Settings tab. What data compression options are selected by default?

6. Click the IPv4 tab. Click the up/down arrows for Method. Notice there are options for automatic IP addressing and an option to manually configure an IP address. Leave Automatic (PPPoE) as the default selection.

7. Click Cancel in the Editing DSL connection 1 dialog box.

8. In the Network Connections window, click Mobile Broadband.

9. Click the Add button.

10. Click the Forward button in the New Mobile Broadband Connection window.

11. Select a country, such as United States and click Forward.

12. Select AT&T and click Forward.

13. Notice at this point you need information specific to the provider, such as your broadband plan name. Click Cancel to exit.

14. Close the Network Connections window.
