In Linux, you can create a folder by using the Nautilus File Browser tool. Or, in virtually all UNIX/Linux systems, including Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux , you can create a folder from the command line. In this project, you learn both approaches.

To create a folder:

1. Click Places in the top Panel and click Home Folder.

2. Click the File menu and click Create Folder.

3. What now appears in the window? Record your observations.

4. Enter your initials plus the word Folder1, such as JPFolder1, and press Enter. (As you start typing, the default entry untitled folder is replaced with your entry.)

5. Right-click the new folder and click Properties.

6. What tabs appear? Click each tab to briefly see the properties it configures.

7. Click Close in the Properties dialog box.

8. Close the window for your home directory.

9. Access the command line, such as by opening a terminal window (click Applications, point to System Tools, and click Terminal).

10. Type ls and press Enter. Do you see any subdirectories listed in your home directory? Is the directory you just created listed?

11. Type mkdir plus a space, then your initials and the word Folder2, such as JPFolder2 (see Figure 4-24). Press Enter.

12. Type ls and press Enter to verify that you successfully created the new folder (or directory in other UNIX/Linux systems).

13. Close the terminal window.
