In this project, you learn how to compress files in Windows XP/Vista/7, Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, and Server 2008/Server 2008 R2. You need a computer with a drive formatted for NTFS.

To compress files in a Windows XP or Server 2003/Server 2003 R2 folder:

1. Click Start and click My Computer.

2. Double-click Local Disk (C:).

3. Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.

4. Browse to the folder you created in Hands-On Project 4-4, such as JPFolder and doubleclick it.

5. Click the File menu, point to New, and click Folder.

6. For the new subfolder’s name, type in your initials plus the word SubFolder, such as “JPSubFolder”. Press Enter.

7. Click the Back (arrow) button (under the File menu by default) to go back to the main folder, such as JPFolder.

8. Right-click the folder (such as JPFolder) and click Properties.

9. Click the Advanced button to view a dialog box similar to Figure 4-28. Notice and record the advanced attributes you can configure. Which attribute is important for backing up files?

10. Click Compress contents to save disk space.

11. Click OK to save your change to the advanced attributes.

12. Click OK to exit the folder’s Properties dialog box.

13. In the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box (which is displayed when a folder contains subfolders or files), click Apply Changes to this folder, subfolders, and files, if this option is not already selected.

14. Click OK.

15. Close the Documents and Settings window.

To compress files in a Windows Vista/7 or Server 2008/Server 2008 R2 folder:

1. Click Start and click Computer.

2. Double-click OS (C:) or Local Disk (C:).

3. Double-click the Users folder and then double-click the Public folder.

4. Browse to the folder you created in Hands-On Project 4-4, such as JPFolder and doubleclick it.

5. Right-click in a blank area of the right pane, point to New, and click Folder.

6. For the new subfolder’s name, type in your initials plus the word SubFolder, such as “JPSubFolder”. Press Enter.

7. Click the Back (arrow) button (to the left of the address bar at the top of the window) to go back to the main folder, such as JPFolder.

8. Right-click the folder (such as JPFolder) and click Properties.

9. Click the Advanced button to view the Advanced Attributes dialog box (see Figure 4-29). Notice and record the advanced attributes you can configure. Which attribute is important for backing up files?
