Public image of mental illness. A survey was conducted to investigate the impact of the mass media on the public’s perception of mental illness. (Health Education Journal, Sept. 1994.) The media coverage of each of 562 items related to mental health in Scotland was classified into one of five categories: violence to others, sympathetic coverage, harm to self, comic images, and criticism of accepted definitions of mental illness. A summary of the results is provided in the following table:
