What practical need in World War II led to the development of the modern computer? What was ENIAC?

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Henry Hollerith and Charles Babbage worked to invent the machines, which has the capability to think like humans. However, during the initial days of the World War II, it displayed a practical problem. This was the time when the modern computers were invented.

During this period, there was desperate need of a machine that could do the accurate and fast calculations, by the U.S Army. To hit the enemies’ artillery, accurately, proper and accurate calculations were needed to be done. There was a whole record in the book, which described the large calculations for a single trajectory.

About 12 hours were required to set the artilleries to a particular trajectory. Hence, the modern computers were invented. These could measure the trajectory, along with which the bullet or the missile has to be dropped. Also, the humidity level, the air trajectory, temperature and the other factors were considered by such machines.

The first marvelous computer that was invented during this period was called as ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator). The development of this computer was completed in the year 1943. Its size was very huge, about 80 feet long, and was horse-shoe shaped. The machines have been evolved to transform the giant computers such as ENIAC to the smartphones, which we use today.
