In your opinion, has psychology reached the stage of a unified paradigm that unites all the different approaches to psychology? Do you think evolutionary psychology is likely to be the final stage in the fractious and fragmented history of the field?

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

The subject matter on psychology has oscillated from time to time, that is from subjective to objective and then again to subjective. The cognitive movement led to publication of various journals in the 1970s. The first journal that was published in the year 1970 was cognitive psychology. After this cognition, cognitive science, cognitive therapy and research and many more were published in the year 1971, 1977 and 1983, respectively.

Around 40 journals were published by the year 2010. These journals dealt with many facets of the cognitive psychology. This subject is not limited only to the psychology; instead it covers many subjects under its wings, for example, philosophy, linguistics, artificial intelligence, computer science, anthropology and many others. George miller has doubted the unity of such diverse subjects under psychology.

However, the multidisciplinary approach has been proved to be better and this fact cannot be denied. The institute and many laboratories have been established to further study the cognitive psychology and establish it as a most fascinating subject. It shares, however one aspect with the primitive behaviorism, that is, the experimental procedure. This is because; everything in the science needs a proof.

Hence, many labs have been established where such experiments can be performed. Embedded cognition is a new addition of cognitive psychology. It acknowledges that there are physical aspects of cognition that are revealed in the activity of the brain and it is also revealed in the perception and the sensation. This means that the cognitive process in the mind is affected by the motor response.

Cognitive overload is another important part of the cognitive psychology. This is related to the multitasking. In the experiments, conducted on the college students, it was observed that those students who were exposed to different types of electronic images performed very poorly as compared to those who were not multitaskers

In conclusion, this filed requires more research and it has no end. This is because more and more species have been evolving and all of them unique characteristic features. These species tend to adapt in their surroundings and hence, they might have different strategies and different goals of life. This might attract scientists and maybe there are certain thing in such organisms that might change the concept of psychology as a result of which new theories might be proposed.
