Which of the criticisms of GOFAI remain viable when directed against connectionism

Which of the criticisms of GOFAI remain viable when directed against connectionism

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Connectionism was proposed by Donald Hebb in 1940s and is used in the studies of artificial intelligence. It is a set of approach, also utilized in other disciplines like cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and psychology. It models behavioral phenomena by interconnecting networks of simple units.

GOFAI (Good Old-Fashioned Artificial Intelligence), also called symbolic artificial intelligence, is a collective term for all methods used in artificial intelligence research based on symbolic coding of problems and search. John Haughland termed GOFAI in 1985.

GOFAI can perform several tasks, like playing chess or backgammon, but cannot do simpler tasks like getting a pen. These brain strategies could not be decoded by GOFAI. Even, subject manipulation cannot be done by GOFAI. Once, if any part of the system goes wrong, the whole of the process will go wrong.

The data will be fully disrupted. GOFAI cannot perform learning and perception. GOFAI can synthesize the information they contain. However, in connectionism, the process can perform several tasks at one go. Hence, GOFAI has its own level of limitations.
