How would you design an experiment to condition a rabbit to salivate to the ringing of a cell phone?
One can hold a piece of raw bread and can show it to the rabbit before actually handing over to the animal for eating. The rabbit might start to salivate on seeing the raw bread. The response of rabbit of salivating when bread is put in its mouth is the natural reaction of reflexes of the digestive system, any learning is not required.
This was termed as the unconditioned or innate reflex by Pavlov. Salivating by looking at the food should be learned and is not reflexive. This reaction was now termed as the conditioned reflex since it is dependent on the rabbit’s making a link between the sight of food and then eating of the food.
It was discovered that several stimuli will produce the response of salivation, which is conditioned reflexes far as the stimulus had the capability of compelling the attention of rabbit without inducing fear or anger.
The salivation shown by the rabbit by the mere looking at the piece of bread stimulates the action of salivation in the rabbit which is considered as the reflex of conditioning as the rabbit will have to learn about it first. And when the salivation occurs when the food is put in the mouth, it is considered as the innate reflex.
