My 55 year old mom eats a healthy diet that is high in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and she does not smoke or consume alcohol. We have a family history of heart disease and she recently heard that moderate alcohol consumption can help reduce her risk of heart disease. Can you tell me the pros and cons of her consuming alcohol?

Answer: Healthy lifestyle can improve the physical health as well as mental health too. Some of the pros of the alcohol consumption are:

  • If alcohol is consumed in a moderate amount, it can reduce the risk of ischemic stroke.
  • Little consumption of alcohol can prevent heart disease.
  • It also prevents the diabetic conditions.

Cons of consuming alcohol:

  • Excessive alcohol consumption causes liver inflammation and diseases.
  • Increases the risk of chronic disease.
  • Loss of consciousness occurs.
  • People may get addicted to the alcohol consumption.
