Answer #1

Intonation refers to the variation in pitch while speaking. It is different from the tone that is used to distinguish words in linguistics. Intonations are meant to display the attitudes and emotions of the speaker. It helps in signalling the difference between different types of speech such as statements and questions.

There are mainly four types of intonations:

1. Falling Intonation: the pitch falls with time

2. Rising intonation: the pitch rises over time.

3. Dipping or Fall-rise Intonation: pitch falls and then rises.

     4. Peaking or Rise-fall Intonation: pitch rises and then falls.

The four common intonation patterns for sentences in English:

A. yes/no questions usually have rising intonation at the end.

Eg: Is it time to (rising intonation) sleep?

Are you going to school (rising intonation) today?

B. wh and how commonly have falling intonation at the end.

What is your (falling intonation) name?

How are you (falling intonation) today?

C. The Statements tend to have falling intonation on the last syllable of the sentence.

I have a (falling intonation) a toothache.

D. listed / series – In series the first spoke items have rising intonation and the last one has falling intonation.

Do you want to have (rising intonation) pens, pencils or (falling intonation) crayons?
